The Kanji
word for 'Contradiction' 
(mujun)
derives from an ancient Chinese legend.
Once upon a time there was a proud merchant who claimed that his halberd was so powerful that it could pierce any shield, and that his shield was so strong that it could repel any halberd in the world. Then came along a wise man and queried: "What happens if your irresistible halberd strikes against your impenetrable shield?" The merchant considered this dilemma at great length. At last he exclaimed: "Golly! That must be a contradiction!" In this way, mujun came to mean contradiction for all ages to come.
